Description

Group photograph of soldiers and five officers from the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards at Cove Common camp, Hampshire, gathered for Queen Victoria's Jubilee, 1897. They pose for the image in five rows on the grass in front of trees. Most of the soldiers are wearing their scarlet tunics with pillbox caps, and holding their rifles. The officers in the centre of the second row (seated) are wearing patrol jackets and field service caps. On the grass in front sit five buglers, four of them boys, wearing the elaborately braided musician's tunic and holding their bugles. Image possibly produced by W. Gregory & Co., London, and F. G. O. Stuart. The most senior men in the picture are named as (from left to right) Sgt Napier (probably seated in the second row, third from the left); Sgt Maj Fletcher (probably seated in the second row, fourth from the left); then 2/Lt John A C Quilter; Lt Wilfred W Ashley; Col Horace Ricardo; Maj Robert Scott-Kerr; Lt & Adjutant Maxwell Earle and Colour Sgt F Aston (probably seated sixth from the right). From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
