Description

Photograph of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards formed up in many lines on a South African plain (possibly near Harrismith), taken during the Boer War, 1900-1902 (c). They are wearing khaki drill uniform with pith helmets, and hold their rifles with fixed bayonets. Several officers stand in the front line holding up their swords, or sit on horseback. The huts, tents and equipment and horses of their camp can be seen in the distance behind them, as can the hillside. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
