Photograph of two soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards posing for the image in a field kitchen, probably taken near Harrismith, South Africa, during the Boer War, 1901-1902. The 2nd Battalion were based in Harrismith with Lieutenant-General Sir Leslie Rundle's 8th Infantry Division. The men are likely to be other ranks at a small garrison. One stands in the entrance to a low dug-out or shelter with a corrugated metal door. There are various pots, pans and buckets surrounding them, for either cooking or laundry or both. A barbed wire fence is visible behind them. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
