Description

Photograph of a large group of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, 1903 (c). They pose for the image sitting or standing in six rows, with trees behind them. The image was probably taken in the United Kingdom after the battalion had returned from South Africa in October 1902. The men are wearing khaki service dress and peakless Brodrick caps. Two regimental drums and a bugle are displayed on the ground in front of them. Lt John Arnold Quilter sits in the centre of the second row, behind those seated on the ground, wearing a light-coloured uniform, peaked cap and holding a walking cane. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
