Description

Photograph of Sergeant Major William Edward Acraman, 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, posing for the image in front of a bank with trees, 1903 (c). The image was probably taken in the United Kingdom after the battalion had returned from South Africa in October 1902. He is wearing khaki service dress with boots, gaiters and slouch hat. His badge of rank, a Crown, can be seen on his lower sleeve. Acraman was a long-serving soldier and officer who rose from the ranks to become a Quartermaster and Honorary Captain, winning the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the Boer War, and the Military Cross in World War One. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
