Description

Photograph of a group of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, in a field kitchen at Corndean Camp, near Cheltenham, August 1909. They are wearing khaki uniform with peaked caps, although many are in their shirt sleeves. In the foreground there is a standpipe and tap with a bucket nearby. The men stand around a central cooking arrangment with two Soyer stoves to the right of the image, and a series of trenches dug into the ground and covered over with mud. The stoves would heat and insulate along the trenches and then the series of camp kettles sitting on top. Behind the main group of men is a wood pile and a long table with crockery and pans. In the background the tents of the camp can be seen. The image was taken by Dr Herbert Edward Durham of Cheltenham. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909.
