Description
Creamware model of the Cenotaph, 1920 (c). Manufactured by J W Botolph and Company. Transfer printed with the crest of the City of London, with a hand painted gold wreath above and a gold line around the base. The cenotaph or empty tomb in Whitehall, London was designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for the marching troops to salute, in honour of the dead, in the Victory March held on Saturday 19 Jul 1919. His design, strikingly minimalist but non-denominational, was represented by a temporary structure on that day. The permanent stone memorial was unveiled on Armisitice Day 1920.
