Description

Fragment of the original Cenotaph installed on Whitehall, London, 1919. Wood, from the monument designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944), 1919. The original temporary Cenotaph was made of wood and plaster, painted white. The original structure was unveiled on Peace Day, 19 Jul 1919 but was taken down and replaced by the permanent, Portland stone copy in 1920. This fragment was probably part of the catafalque (the structure below the empty tomb) as the upper part was preserved intact after 1920 in the Imperial War Museum at Crystal Palace. The fragment is wrapped in brown paper and string round. A paper label attached records its provenance. The label refers to the presentation of the memento to J Jack Clelland, Assistant Treasurer of Blinded Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen. Associated with World War One, Peace (1918-1921).
