Brass button stick, nd. Belonged to a member of the Ashley family, most likely to have belonged to Joseph Ashley who served from 24 Aug 1939 to June 1946 in the Royal Tank Regiment, The Royal Artillery and as a Mechanist Sergeant in the 1st The Royal Dragoons. He then served with the police from 1946 to 1975. He took part in the D-Day Landings, the Battle for Caen, the Ardennes Offensive, World War Two, North Western Europe (1944). He fought in Germany, France, Denmark and North Africa. This design of button stick was patented in 1918. The cut outs were designed to protect fabric on uniforms from button polish, as well as the various types of brass fittings on the 1908 pattern equipment. Despite changes in equipment, this design of button stick was produced until the 1950s when the wide scale use of brass polish in the British Army was being phased out of everyday use.
