Description

Hand-coloured photograph of Captain Herbert Mackworth Clogstoun, 19th Madras Native Infantry. Made between 1859 and 1862. Photograph appears to be a composite of daguerreotype and photogravure. The figure of Clogstoun is clearly a hand-coloured photograph, whereas the landscape in the background, plus the curtain and writing desk appear to have been engraved and then painted over. It is possible that the colouring was done later than the photograph, likely by a member of his family. Clogstoun’s uniform is not that of the 19th Madras Native Infantry, but possibly of the 2nd Hyderabad Cavalry. Clogstoun lead the Cavalry against rebels at Chichumbah on 15 January 1859 and was awarded the Victoria Cross for this action. His dress is identical to that of Orlando Norrie’s painting of the action, including stylised turban, which looks like it was added later.
