Description

Wooden painted signboard from ‘Hellfire Corner’, Ypres, 1918; brought to Britain after World War One by Lt W S Storie, Royal Army Service Corps, who displayed it in a shop window in Prince’s Street, Edinburgh; ‘Hellfire Corner’ was a busy junction on the Menin road, from Ypres to the frontline trenches; it was a particularly dangerous place throughout the war being within easy range of the German guns, and as a result of constant, heavy shelling was given this nickname by the troops; this believed to be the last signboard used at this position and bears shell fire and small arms fire damage.
