Description

Hell Fire Corner. Photograph of a road running into the distance, lined by shattered trees, nd. Hellfire Corner was a busy junction on the Menin Road near Ypres. It was so named because it was within easy range of the Germans’ guns. Anything moving along the road was vulnerable to devastating shellfire day or night, making it the most dangerous spot in the whole sector. From an album of 284 photographs compiled by 2/Lt R T Cooper, 16th Bn Middlesex Regiment, 1914-1916, 10th Cadet Bn and 16th Bn Hampshire Regiment, 1916, Royal Engineers, 1916-1919.
