Description

Golden Temple Amritsar. Watercolour from a volume of 27 watercolour studies by an unidentified Indian artist, 'The Kingdom of the Punjab, its Rulers and Chiefs, volume I', 1865 (c). The Golden Temple (or Harmandir Sahib) at Amritsar is the most important place of worship for Sikhs. It was built during the 16th century and lavishly decorated during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) with marble and gold, from which it derives its popular name of the ‘Golden Temple’.
