Description

Photograph of the Sikh Golden Temple at Amritsar. From fourth of four photograph albums compiled by Col H Templar, 5th Punjab Cavalry, India, 1880-1910. The Golden Temple (or Harmandir Sahib) at Amritsar is the most important place of worship for Sikhs. It was built during the 16th century and lavishly decorated during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) with marble and gold, from which it derives its popular name of the ‘Golden Temple’.
