Description

One 3.5 oz ball from cannister shell or grape shot fired from a Russian cannon, Crimean War (1854-1856). This 3.5oz (99g.) ball is part of a discharge of grape shot, so called because the assemblage of similar-sized iron balls gathered together in a bag and fired from a cannon at short range (achieving an effect like a giant shot-gun) resembles a bunch of grapes. It is believed to have caused the hole that can be seen in the shako worn by Lt Col Edmund Jeffreys, 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers), during the Crimean War.
