Description
Princess Mary gift box, empty, belonged to Albert Henry Haughton, Middlesex Regiment, Christmas 1914. Made of brass and features a relief profile of Princess Mary surrounded by the names of the Allied countries as of 1914, and symbols of war such as battleships, standards and swords. Associated with World War One (1914-1918). Albert Haughton was only 17 in 1914 and therefore too young to serve overseas, so this box was most likely either given to him in Britain or brought back by someone else and given to him. He died on 15 September 1916 in the first battle of his battalion, 23rd Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment).
