Description

East India Company Officer’s sword, 1850 (c); brass guard inscribed with East India Company lion in cartouche. The sword has a 1796 pattern Cavalry trooper’s blade and a 1822 pattern Infantry Officer’s hilt. The inscription “BALLIA” on the blade possibly suggests that it was made in India as this is not a known sword maker’s name. Associated with Sir John Hearsey, commander of the Bengal Cavalry during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Campaigns

Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), 2nd Sikh War (1848-1849)
